Be it producing the Friday Sports Panel or reading bulletins on BBC Radio 5live, sports commentary on BBC Radio 5live Sports Extra or broadcasting to thousands on BBC Local Radio, Ben is an experienced radio broadcaster, with a warm, welcoming tone to his voice and a confidence and knowledge to broadcast across a range of different sports.
Having cut his teeth as a broadcast journalist at BBC Radio Kent, Ben is now working for BBC Radio 5live as an assistant producer on Eleanor Oldroyd’s Friday Sports Panel, as well as working across the station’s sports bulletins.
Adept at building and maintaining strong contacts with a range of different athletes, agents and governing bodies, Ben is experienced at sourcing guests, writing scripts, editing audio, producing and studio direction at the highest level.
As well as excelling behind the scenes, Ben is an experienced, BBC trained radio broadcaster, gaining the biggest thrill when behind the microphone. He’s pretty much done it all too, presenting sports programming, commentating on football and cricket, reading bulletins, creating original audio packages and interviewing celebrities, athletes and politicians. He currently lends his voice to sports bulletins across BBC Radio 5live, as well as producing sports items across the network.
Ben specialises in sports commentary, where his enthusiastic, witty style takes audiences to the heart of the action wherever he may be.
He can be heard on BBC Radio 5live Sports Extra as part of the team of commentators covering the Women’s Super League, impressing with his detailed research, colourful commentary and insightful interviews. He also freelances for a variety of local BBC radio stations covering the Football League and non-league action, having previously been a regular commentator on Gillingham and Dartford FC.
With over 20 years experience as both player and coach, Ben is a natural cricket commentator too, having followed Kent around the country for a number of years. Working alongside a range of broadcasting talent in some of the world’s finest sporting stadia, Ben has covered some of the most dramatic matches in living memory, interacting with listeners and providing his unique take on the play.
As a presenter, Ben was a regular fixture Saturday Sport on BBC Radio Kent, the most technically challenging programme. His duties included driving the desk, interacting with guests, filling in the gaps between reports and songs with entertaining content, and adding a unique sound to an established programme.
Unphased by the biggest names in the sport, Ben is an inquisitive and original interviewer, having chatted to Dame Kelly Holmes, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Ellie Simmonds, Lord Moynihan, Sir Chris Hoy and Lewis Moody amongst others.
It is not just sport, however, when Ben is experienced. He spent 14 months as BBC Radio Kent’s ‘early reporter’ covering a range of stories in politics, current affairs and showbiz. His stint in news saw him interview Prime Minister David Cameron, along with a host of local politicians, Prince Charles, and celebrities including Chris Evans and Sandy Toksvig.
